The Creation Of The Anglican Diocese Of Ogbia

The demand for Ogbia Diocese started in 2005 at an emergency meeting of the Diocesan Board of the Diocese of Niger Delta West which was held at the St. Peter’s Church, Yenagoa.

The meeting was summoned by the bishop Rt. Rev. Adulphus Amabebe to discuss an ultimatum given by the Primate His Grace Most Red. Peter Jasper Akinola (DD) to choose either a missionary diocese or a suffragan bishop in order to improve on mission and evangelism in the Diocese.

The Diocesan Synod

In the Anglican Communion, a synod is a formal gathering or council of church officials and members to discuss and make decisions on matters concerning the doctrine, governance, and life of the Church.

Synods are essential parts of the governance structure within Anglican provinces and dioceses, and they help ensure representation from the clergy and laity in decision-making processes.

The Diocesan Synod typically consists of the bishop, clergy, and representatives of the laity. It deals with matters affecting the diocese and supports the bishop in decision-making.

Synods have the authority to make decisions on issues such as church law, liturgy, ethical and social issues, and administrative matters. The decisions of a General Synod which is held annually have a significant impact on the churches within the diocese.
